Psychologically, Duryodhan was trying to create malice in the heart of Dronacharya that all his studends were fighting for Arjun.So, their intentions are very clear. And,that was to defeat the army of Kauravs ,which was way bigger in numbers then Pandavas .Still their firmness to fight together as a small army  was worrisome to Duryodhan. It is noteworthy that Duryodhan wanted to change the mindset of Dronacharya by instigating him against dhrupad,his past adversary. Duryodhana uses son of Dhrupad, Dhristadhumn. Dhritadhumn was his student, who learned  art of warfare from Dronacharya and was the commander in chief of Pandavas. . Duyodhan also indicated the military formation of Pandavas.
