Meaning DHRITRASTRA said: Oh Sanjay! After my sons and sons of Pandu are gathered in the place of pilgrimage at Kurushetra with their respective armies preparing to go into a war.what are they upto? ExplanationThe word term Dharamshresta is significant because on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, the Supreme Personality of Godhead was present on the side of Arjun with the only purpose to guide the mankind. Dhritrastra, the father of Kauravas was highly doubtful about the possibility of his son’s ultimate victory. And his doubts inquired
“ Sanjay, what did they do”? Why Kurukshetra was considered to be a holy place because it was marked by great penances of king Kuru and their ancestors. Dhritrastra symbolised a very selfish father, very fearful, partial and his love for his nephews was biased. Dhritrastra never wanted that his nephews were given a rightful share in the inheritance of kuruvansh ,that belonged to both kaurav and pandavs equally. Lord Krishna tried to convince Duryodhan for a compromise but he was adamant to part, even an inch of land to his cousins i.e pandavas.
Dhritrastra was very fearful about the influence of the Holy Place and the outcome of the battle as he knew very well that lord Krishna was on the side of Pandavas and they (pandavs)were all virtuous.
Dhritrastra was a good brother to Pandu in the beginning and had the lineage of great Kuruvanshi culture but he deviated from that path after the death of his elder brother Pandu and partiality towards Pandavs became his major characteristics. Dhritrastra became drunk with the power and kingdom .Dhritrastra even supported Duryodhan ,when he tried to murder the pandavas, deceived them by luring to gamble with their life and future.
Dhritrastra never reprimanded Duryodhan of these actions and inherently knew that these actions will eventually bring doom. So Geeta is also from the point of view of an old, inquisitive father ,who overstepped the rightful path to desecrate his ancestors, family and culture of Kuruvansh.
Sanjay was a student of Vyasa and therefore, by the mercy of Vyasa, Sanjay was able to envision the battlefield and could narrate it to Dhritrastra.
